Nope what you have stated based on that definition of smearing seems correct. It is fairly common in reporting though.
I was of the opinion smearing was when mineralisation ends up in places where it actually didn't come from, due to the drilling process. And yep agree that kind of smearing shouldn't be an issue with diamond.
