Yeah I agree wrt definition of smearing. I see it as downhole contamination from a high grade interval. Less likely in RC holes these days because of face sampling hammers, unlikely in core holes.
Quoting intercepts incorporating sub-grade assays is a different issue. With gold I’d report the full altered interval because the nature of gold mineralisation means it can easily under-report as well as over-report. I have no issue with the way SMI have reported this intercept.
