The heart of the problem lies in the lithium-ion battery anode—and the energy limit of its key component: graphite. Most commercial batteries are already pushing 90 to 95 percent of their capacity.
Scientists have long known that by adding other ingredients, such as silicon, to the anode, they can boost the battery’s capacity. However, there is a catch. Silicon expands up to 300% during charging, which causes the anodes to swell, crack, and eventually fail.
