As far as rock chips go, they can mean Jack and they can also mean that they broke off something that had some more of the same stuff.
in 1883 Charles Rasp found a Rock Chip. At first he thought it was Tin ..................... but before that Charles Sturt passed through the same region on his 1844-45 Expedition.
He also saw some Rock Chips which he thought were Iron Ore.................. I guess not everyone had a Toyota Landcruiser with Air Conditioning and plenty of load carrying capacity back then.
