Drilling has a number of jobs.

Drilling a smaller area gives exact depths and quality of the material being drilled for, it also gives you the different layers of material that will be dug up (knowing if they’re going to be digging up hard rock as an example)

It also provides you fault lines in the resource, drilling gives you all the information to work out exactly where you want to mine, how far down, how cost effective etc etc.
