It's all about retaining market share. They're happy to cop a massive hit in the short-term as long as they come out the other end with their client list intact, then they can just raise the price and it's business as usual. They got burned in the 90s when they reduced output, people ventured elsewhere for supply and it was difficult to lure them back when things returned to normal. Once bitten, twice shy.
