Got it. In practice you can almost always amend a Statement of Claim up to trial, and often even during trial. The SOC explains why you want what you want. But there's another document, which sets out what you want. That's the "writ", and amending that is a lot harder. If MSV sued SMS for $amount, but then wanted to pursue $higheramount, it wouldn't be as easy as just amending the SOC - they'd need to get permission to amend the writ.
