Of course they know. It would be borderline negligence for any board not to be on top of any significant changes on their register, especially if someone who's potentially a threat shows up. Their job is first and foremost to maximise shareholders returns, which includes mounting credible defence against an expected low ball offer and try to drum up other possible interested parties, etc.
