To be honest mate I am not full bottle on it either but I think it is data storage over the web without the need for big storage facilities. So it will bypass the likes of Google, Amazon web services etc. Free, unregulated, decentralized data storage. That's what I think, I don't have a large amount invested in it but as it is new tech the gains to be made can be huge, so I took a punt. The possibilities with this sort of tech are absolutely limitless. Imagine doing away with the banks, doctors keeping your records, every contract you have ever signed all being accessible in an instant by yourself from your home or wherever you are. The future is definitely blockchain oriented so best to get in on the ground floor.
