St George Mining’s Mt Alexander project continues to shape as one to watch in the Goldfields nickel space, with assays yesterday showing more high-grade results from the project west of Leonora.
Drilling at its Cathedral prospect returned nickel-copper sulphides from 30m below surface, with a best hit of 3.28 metres at 5.77 per cent nickel, 2.43 per cent copper and 0.18 per cent cobalt from 52.75m.
The holes were drilled in November to test for an extension to the east of the previously defined Cathedrals target.
St George shares were up 4.3 per cent or 1c to 24c yesterday having climbed as high as 27c earlier in trade.
Stocks in the junior climbed as high as 47.5c in early December on the back of positive results from Mt Alexander, previously owned by BHP Billiton before it chose to divest some of its exploration assets around the northern Goldfields a couple year ago.

But it was savaged in trade a week later after returning weak results from its Stricklands prospect.
Nickel has been a commodity of interest around the Goldfields and WA more broadly in recent months because of expectations demand is poised to grow for its use in electric vehicles.
Fellow explorer Zenith Minerals also received a bump yesterday after outlining some nickel hits at its Split Rocks project south of Southern Cross.
But after rising sharply on the bourse in the morning Zenith closed even at 18c.
