Now, splitit have their own payment gateway and handle splitting the payments. This makes the experience more seamless and splitit charge a % fee for both instalments and for use of the payment gateway. So they take both fees, Before someone else would take the gateway fee. Effectively they now take the whole piece of the pie instead of only part of it.

It is available to all merchants in the us, it is not tied to stripe. Under the hood they have used a 3rd party to help build the gateway (stripe). It's not relevant to consumers or merchants what their gateway does under the hood, but I guess since they partner with stripe they mentioned it, but I think this has just led to confusion. Easier to just focus on the fact they built the gateway and pretend they never mentioned stripe as part of this.
