I have driven from Adelaide to Darwin at least 6 times over the years, for me Adelaide to Coober Pedy is the first day at 900km steady driving. If you want to push it the first day go to Marla bore.
Still have 800km to cover the next day from Coober Pedy.
Probably best they fly to Alice and hire a large 4wd and drive the last bit can do it in a day that way.
$1.8m is not going to provide much in way of exploration, and looking at the size of the of the area they have to explore it may be a good idea to do a magnetic survey from a plane, rather than driving around looking at rock outcrops and taking samples.
The magnetic anomalies typically identify the areas that should be focused on, then they can drive into those identified areas and take samples.
