News this morning that China is restricting the export of Geranium and Gallium. The tech war between China and the US is scaling up with the news. From August 1st, China will require a licence to export these two critical metals used in compound semiconductors. This is not significant in the market, but it does signal intent. Other countries do produce these two metals. China dominates gallium production with 94%. You can see where this is going. China has used these sorts of measures in the past with other critical metals such as antimony, tungsten and rare earths. Bear in mind that China controls battery production.
