Personally feel any fast track approval would be a bad political outcome for both the National and NZ first parties
Hard enough to get a McDonalds site approved up the road at Wanaka that takes up only around 400 square meters of building space, compare that to many hectares of land scarred by an open cut mine , the probable need for tailings storage , and how that tailings storage is sited for safety and aesthetics in relation to Lake Dunstan's headwaters and local wineries
Maybe Santana are just pushing the envelope to see how far they can go with getting approvals so they can come to a compromise and end up with a less environmentally challenging underground mine which I suspect locals would grudgingly eventually approve of ?
