Plough, I have family in that area who own a small farm of about 1100 hectares. They also have their holiday house in Wanaka. They are 6th generation in the area so you can understand they are a reasonably established well known farming family. Everyone they know, the broader circles they mix in, are supportive of this mine bringing jobs to the area. The vast majority of locals in the area want it to happen. But as always with these things, media in order to create an air of contention and drama, dig out the few who are anti and interview them. Do not be swayed by the cunning attempts of media to paint a different picture than reality.
