By the biggest car company I think you're referring to Toyota. While they are not at the vanguard of EV advancement they are leaders in hydrogen fuel cell powered cars. These vehicles are driven by electric motors and require a similar quantity of permanent magnets. That's the beauty of permanent magnet minerals, they don't rely on picking a winner between battery and hydrogen.
