"Thailand’s House of Representatives – the lower chamber in the National Assembly – voted on Thursday to set up a 60-member “extraordinary committee” to look into a proposal to set up casino complexes in Thailand, the idea being to attract foreign visitors and create fresh income for the country, reported respectively several local media outlets.The committee would include 15 representatives from Thailand’s cabinet, and 45 members drawn from across the nation’s political parties, the media reports said. It is anticipated the group would complete its study in “90 days”.The committee would have to look into “moral issues” related to casinos, and what form of legal framework could ensure proper regulation and taxation of casino businesses, said Thailand’s deputy prime minister Wissanu Krea-ngam as cited by the Bangkok Post newspaper."

So will a Poipet killing mega casino finally happen in Bangkok? Or will it be tourist only smaller scale resort in a hotspot away from the capital? Perhaps restricted to tourists and wealthy locals in a compromise?

Anyway it crumbles, including conservative elements getting the idea shut down, it will likely take upwards of 5 years from here before a major intergrated resort is ready to open.

90 days just to decide, then months to squabble over location and scope, months to craft laws, months to commence a tender process, and ultimately 2 or 3 years to build.

But, the glory days of Poipet look like they may never return if this gets up. I can't imagine if a new mega casino opened in Bangkok, people would bother about a two hour drive in horrble traffic to Poipet.

Bangkok location and opened to all Thai people would be the worst case scenario for Poipet. The Poipet market is already saturated and very competitve to add to the troubles.

Imagine the player incentives needed to get a Bangkok local to bother to drive to Poipet and mess around at a border crossing.

All will be revealed next year, we will see if Star Vegas becomes even more of a melting ice cube..

Or as the AFR recently described, "a fading monement to human misery".
