Your last paragraph is something I will also never be capable of understanding.
My analysis won't be as sophisticated as yours - noting your amazing contributions, Adam, isn't it if I recall your name - but I have spent time looking for 'quiet achievers'.
That said, it's challenging to find companies like REH that have the treasured 'moat', but it can be rewarding over time.
As an investor I am very, very happy with a consistent capital growth return of a small percentage above CPI, plus small dividends twice a year, so anything more is a bonus.
It's counter-intuitive that many analysts fail to ever notice these pretty consistent performers. They cannot put the microscope on every ASX-listed entity but they love to concentrate to an exaggerated degree on fads and seem to largely ignore longer-established outfits that have a track record of sustainable returns to holders.
In my failing to consider companies like APT as possible investments, some would be critical and say 'you're too conservative' but when companies like APE, JLG, REH, SDF and SRV are on offer, I prefer (and hold) all these as unless I'm very wrong, they should deliver reasonable returns over time, though not always in a linear fashion.
