    China pledges US$18Mln to build new Mozambican Armed Forces barracks in Maputo

    O País / Chang WanQuan ensured that China will continue to support training programmes for the Mozambique Defence Armed Forces (FADM) staff as well as exchange programmes between military higher education institutions.
    Chinese authorities announced the provision of additional funding to Mozambique’s Ministry of National Defence, a funding of 60 million Yuan, around US$18 million, to build infrastructure in the country.
    The agreement was signed today, during a meeting between the ministerial delegations of Defence of Mozambique and China. According to Mozambican Defence Minister (MDN) Atanásio M’tumuke the amount will finance the construction of a Defence and Security Forces (FDS) barracks in Maputo province.

    M’tumuke disclosed the content of the new Chinese funding, as he spoke to the press at the end of an audience granted today in Maputo to his Chinese counterpart, Chang WanQuan, by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.
    According to minister M’tumuke, Chang WanQuan and President Nyusi held  a courtesy meeting which served to review the stage of cooperation between Mozambique and China in various sectors.
    Development depends on peace
    China says that the stability and peace environment in Mozambique is a preponderant factor for the country’s development.
    At a meeting today between Atanasio M’tumuke and his Chinese counterpart, Chang WanQuan, the Chinese Defence Minister ensured that China will continue to support training programmes for the Mozambique Defence Armed Forces (FADM) staff and exchange programmes between military higher education institutions .

    The meeting between the two ministers took place behind closed doors and no statements were made to the press. However, the Ministry of Defence issued a press release in which it disclosed the content of the talks.
    Chang Wanquan, who is on a three-day visit to Mozambique since Monday, explained that his stay in the country is a result of the consensus reached between the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, and Chinese statesman Xi Jinping, during  Nyusi’s visit to the People’s Republic of China in May 2017.
    Defence Minister Atanasio M’tumuke emphasised the need to further strengthen relations between the two countries.
    In addition to the FADM training area, M’tumuke says that the two countries should also cooperate in military infrastructure, logistics and health, with a view to making the Mozambican Defence Forces more operational.

    Mozambican president hopes to strengthen cooperation with China

    MAPUTO, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said his country hopes to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields, including defense and security.
    Nyusi made the remarks while meeting with visiting Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Chang Wanquan, in the presidential palace in Maputo on Tuesday.
    The president said both sides are now working together to carry forward Mozambique-China traditional friendship into a new stage.
    He said Mozambique highly values its ties with China, consistently adheres to the one-China principle, and stands ready to enhance communication and cooperation with China on international and regional affairs.
    Nyusi added that his country is always grateful for China's disinterested assistance and ready to deepen the pragmatic cooperation with China in various fields, so as to benefit the two peoples, Africa and the world at large.
    The two countries decided to lift bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership during Nyusi's state visit to China last year.
    Chang said his visit aims to materialize the important consensus reached by the leaders of both countries, to consolidate bilateral ties, as well as to enrich cooperation.
    Chang said China attaches importance to relations between two countries and two militaries and is willing to build a community with a shared future together with Mozambique to benefit the two peoples.
    During his visit in Maputo, Chang also held talks with his counterpart, Minister of National Defence Atanasio M'tumuke.
