titanium dioxide is added to sunscreens to boost the spf while not having to deal with the whitening effect of zinc oxide. spf refers to uvb protection only.
you could have two sunscreens with spf 50: one zinc oxide as the only active filter and one with zinc + titanium dioxide. the first one will provide a much higher uva protection.
people are becoming more aware that uva protection is essential for skin health in the long run.
