Well in 1913 and for a great deal longer the horse was providing low cost locomotion on farms, non rail transport of goods and so on. Most Australian farms in the 1940s were powered by animals. The rough rule of thumb (depending on where you were) was that it took about 1/4 of a farm to provide enough food/fodder/energy to keep the animals fueled up. Horses really didn't diminish until post world war two. At the outset of the war the British were the only fully mechanised army. Steam/coal closely followed by sail still provided maritime locomotion into the 40s. Sail actually held on as a costal maritime locomotion until the 40s as well.
EVs aren't a paradigm shift, they are simply - until other generation of energy becomes available - presented as such. That is because in truth the source of the energy has only been minimally replaced. The example of 1/4 of a farm being tied up for fuel production would/may compare to what a farmer may pay for diesel/electricity now. As previous posters have observed; where does plastic come from? That includes carpets, table tops, benches, plumbing pipes, sewerage pipes, pretty much everything you see or touch; lets not get started on mobile phones and computers.
So change wont be overnight because it can't be unless we all live much more cave man like.
