ExxonMobil and BHP are working to bring Victoria’s Longford gas plant back to full production as an unplanned outage combines with soaring demand to send east-coast wholesale gas prices surging to five-year highs.
Spot prices for natural gas in Victoria hit $20 a gigajoule on Tuesday, the highest since 2016, just as cold weather drives up gas demand for heating. Other east-coast spot prices are also on the rise, climbing to $20 in Sydney, $19 in Adelaide and $16 in Brisbane on Wednesday.
