The Geelong refinery has a Residue Cayalytic Cracker Unit so able to process cheaper heavy crude. Could be one of several reasons. The RCCU at Geelong also has a Power Recovery unit on its main compressor traon which generates a modest amount of electric power, though less than the refinery uses in total. There is also an adjacent Polypropylene unit turning low value by-product into higher value plastic.
They have a solvents plant which produces xylene for paint, again as a value added, and used to have a lube oil refinery making base oil for lubricants, turned into finished product by blending at a plant in Newport.
Geelong also has a more modern inline blender, rather than a batch blender, which reduces time to make product and is able to optimise the combination of different blend components to produce on-spec high volume products like gasoline in the most cost-efficient way possible.
