The return to shareholders would be far greater for a standalone plant, so my vote is that they chose that option. Feeding the Telfer plant does have additional costs. Someone will need to build an all-weather road connecting the Minyari mine to Telfer. More importantly, there will be additional operational costs, trucking ore to Telfer plus the charges which Newcrest will levy - they will need to make a profit from processing the ore and they will be the ones controlling the whole shebang.
Be careful what you wish for!
The "best" option is not as obvious as some here think.
