Silicon is something that we should be mindful of, particularly because it is so light, cheap and easy to produce.

However, researchers still think we are some years out. And when you read further into these announcements by people like Mercedes you hear vagueness and associated costs by use of terms like 'mid-decade' release and only an 'option' to the usual Li ion. That means that haven't yet worked out how to bring the cost down.

Tesla is the one we should watch and I am not even sure they have started doping their anode with silicon yet. And if they have they are doing it gradually over time.
