For those of you really wanting to get your head around the way Appen works and the sort of things they do, you can always register to become a part of their crowd sourced team. They pay amounts via PayPal to team members, ranging from about $9USD right up to several hundred USD for more complex tasks.
I've been asked to do things such as critique Facebook pages and provide feedback on search functionality, through to having 3 x fifteen minute recorded conversations over the phone with a friend or family member in my normal voice, through to being asked to identify various images I've been sent and label them with an appropriate word(s) accordingly.
As a general observation/comment from when I first became a crowdsource contractor (about two years ago) they have improved their user interface and customer service markedly.
