Hi Newby they take the brine from the aquifer to the holding pond then through a tank containing the beads. Lithium combines with the beads. Then they drain the brine into a holding pond prior to reinjection. This process adds no chemical to the brine. The brine in holding pond 2 is exactly the same as the brine in holding pond one minus most of it's lithium. The beads are washed with hydrochloric acid but the products of that are Lithium Chloride and water. The other chemicals needed are used in the carbonating process. These do not come into contact with the brine. This is one way the Lilac process is superior to traditional methods that generate quite a lot of waste.
