Shorter plans to buy as cheap as they can, because they expect it to go up.
Lending to the shorter would only hurt you if you planned to sell short term (after SP is manipulated down), or the company planned to do a raising (at a more dilutive lower price).
If you have the same time outlook as the buyer, then you come out ahead. The SP ends up rising in the medium term as expected, and you get your fees for lending too - extra gains.
