kbear will probably have a better answer for you, but as far as i am aware from what i have read on wikipedia:
if the condition is considered rare (less than 200 000 people), then the drug is granted orphan drug status.

Triple negative breast cancer = 100 000
metastatic colorectal cancer = 180 000
resectable pancreatic cancer = 18 000
