Apparently one of my ancestors was a Grocer in Auckland, NZ in the mid 1800's, and he would travel out to the Manukau heads to watch the monthly supply ships carrying sugar, molasses, salt and spices etc. cross the 'Bar', a treacherous shallow reef a mile out from the harbour mouth. If it sank or foundered, he would ride like blazes back to Auckland and buy up all the available sugar etc. before word spread of the wrecking. He would then jack up the prices and made a fortune, none of which has trickled down to me, unfortunately. True price manipulation.
