The MLEM survey targets the Diorite Hill layered ultramafic magmatic intrusion that has the potential to host large nickel sulphide deposits of the magmatic type. It’s a style of mineralisation that was previously overlooked in the state in favour of the komatiitic style of mineralisation seen at Mt Keith and Kambalda.
This held true until the discovery of the Nova-Bollinger deposit in 2012, which led to an explosion in exploration activity in the Fraser Range.
Great Southern Mining (ASX:GSN) believes that the layered ultramafic intrusions in the Yilgarn Craton are also prospective for nickel sulphide discoveries.
“GSN’s exploration portfolio is characterised by large prospective landholdings with >2,000sqkm in North Queensland and around Laverton in WA,” chief executive officer Sean Gregory said.
“East Laverton is highly prospective for nickel-sulphide discoveries, including of the Nova magmatic style which was overlooked by previous explorers who were focused on other commodities and deposit types.”
Survey details
The survey will be carried out using a 1,200m by 1,200m spacing covering 70sqkm.
This has been modelled by exploration and geophysical consultants Newexco to be sufficient to identify target conductors that may be 400m by 400m in extent and at depths of 400m.
Areas of interest may be followed-up with closer spacing and the survey is expected to run for three to four weeks.
Previous exploration on the 400sqkm project just 15km east of the town of Laverton had been hampered by shallow cover.
