Shorters don't fleece anyone in my opinion. They take a view, invest and make money if their trade works out. If you think your hand is weaker than theirs sell your position. If you think it's stronger then keep it. As a generally long position holder i see great value in the ability for parties to take a short position. This situation appears to have unfolded because rightly or wrongly it has been very easy to attack a business model that needs sustained capital inflow until a very long life asset matures and there is a lot of crystal ball gazing as to the ultimate profitability along the way. Most companies that need capital for long life assets invest upfront and secure the capital then. Not a company such as this. It's survival is dependent on continued support until the asset meets critical mass until its maturity. Thus the question that has to be asked is, is the business model at fault given it was so easy to attack, or the people that exploited it?
