If the plant turns out to be a dud, its all over for SHs with the existing creditors and debt convenants taking priority. Even fixing the plant will be a massive expense and who will pay for it.

This kind of critical issue doesn't appear overnight, it would be evident long before. This may be the time to ask how early and how much the company knew of issue(s) and did the company meet its continuous disclosure obligations. Then check when you bought in the stock.
