This move was necessary on a current cash flow basis. There care a number of problems that need to be solved at Nifty before production can hit targets. This will take some time, and money, and patience. Mining at a big loss is the formula for disaster. The truck needs to come off the road for repairs, so to speak. Ventilation shafts for one. Better machinery(?) for two. Don't forget big operators like Glencore (as one other clued up poster has mentioned) take cash flow negative mining assets off line often. Don't think of Nifty as kaput. Its just offline, undergoing repairs. The risk of insolvency and or a huge capital raising diluting holders out of existence has gone. You don't mine to lose money.
How Renison will go will be influenced by production of tin, going up fast Q3, 4. Cost of production not rising, cost of production per ton falling as grade rises. Next comes the tin price. Tin prices (the electronics metal) have trended lower with the trade disputes ongoing. The $A too may go a bit lower as iron ore prices have fallen following Brazil flooded mine re-entry to market, and coal prices are down. If so, this will increase the $A return so may be a self cancelling effect to some extent.
Remember world production of tin is only about 400,000 tons.
Once the bottlenecks are sorted at Nifty without the cash drain of operating at a loss, it can be brought back online when a suitable opportunity comes. It has high grades, very high, by world standards, outside the current mining area. All around. The grades in the current mining area are still in the top 10% or so worldwide. This can be a bonanza mine, but not right now.
The debt to Citibank can be serviced in the short term, then paid down with tin profits. If they cant make (good) money with the grades coming at Renison, no one can, anywhere.
If our stock price is being manipulated with a view to a form of asset theft the authorities need to be informed about it to look into it. Who are the relevant bodies? I'm willing to write to them. They wont act without a complaint. If a bunch of us do, that will be more motivation and may well scare the predator off. I might have a few numbers in Canberra I can call too. That might get the public servants off their collective shiny backsides.
