The government, which wants to expand nuclear power, is open to Swedish uranium mining or extraction from mining residues, according to Sweden's radio Ekot. A proposal to lift the ban on uranium mining, which was decided by the former S-led government, is expected to come soon.

The proposal is partly about being able to use uranium as a by-product in other extraction, partly about how Swedish uranium mining can become possible, according to the radio channel. In Skövde, both the Moderates and the Sweden Democrats do not rule out that mining may become an issue.

- If an application is profitable for the company that wants to mine and it complies with all the environmental regulations contained in the legislation, it is free to proceed, says Tobias Andersson (SD), member of parliament and councilor in Skövde, to Ekot.

In Sweden, uranium has only been mined in Ranstad, which lies between Skövde and Falköping, where weak profitability and local resistance led to the vetoing of the municipalities most closely affected.
