James Warburton says Seven ‘won’t blow our brains out’ on AFL rights

Seven West Media chief executive James Warburton has said the Kerry Stokes controlled media company will not “blow our brains out by doing ridiculous sports deals”, as competition heats up for AFL broadcast rights.

The AFL sent out expressions of interest to potential bidders for its next broadcast rights deal earlier this year, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald revealed in April. Seven is the AFL’s longtime broadcast partner, but rival network Ten and its owner Paramount are preparing a joint bid for the entire rights package from the end of 2024, and AFL chief executive Gill McLachlan is leading a team to meet global giant Amazon in the US.

Warburton has cut costs aggressively at Seven since taking on the CEO role in 2019, and he told investors at a conference hosted by investment bank Macquarie that the company would remain disciplined in its bid to renew its longstanding deal with the AFL.

“We haven’t done all the hard work in this business to blow our brains out by doing ridiculous sports deals,” Warburton said.

“If Paramount paid what Foxtel were paying they would need three million subscribers paying them $15 a month for the 10 months or nine months of the season just to break even.”

Personally don't enjoy his phrasing, but good to hear about capital management.
