Open short positions need a lending agreement between the provider and the hedge fund doing the shorting, the liquidity is fake because the owner of those shares is not actually selling their shares and they may not even be aware their shares are provided to the shorter under the agreement. Theoretically these shares should be bought back and a short squeeze can occur if significant buying takes place to put upwards pressure on the share price, Clinuvel is not providing this in any way with the buyback as they have barely purchased any shares yet, it has hardly begun. CUV is actually pretty bad at attracting investor interest and this is easily observed by comparing CUV to Disc, Cash burning Disc is basically very high risk and no guarantee they will ever achieve anything from a few phase 1 and 2s yet each day they attract massive trade volumes and their market cap is approaching double of very profitable CUV. Soirees and other events have never provided any obvious buying pressure so to me they seem to be a waste of money and resources, they refuse to upgrade from the pink sheets in the States to provide access to more investors and they are rarely if ever seen in the mainstream media. So shareholder interests have been poorly looked after as we can see from the 5 year low in the share price and therefore a very strong strike was recorded at the last AGM. Now we have a new chairman I am more hopeful of the future, the buyback is a fantastic concept but they need to do much better with implementing it, the finances and pipeline are better than ever and it is clear a dubious hedge fund is using every trick in the book to suppress the price which clearly can't go on forever. CUV said it only took one investor buying a lot of shares to take the shareprice over $40 in Sep 21, so if they can attract one or more investors to do that same type of buying and combine it with a more aggressive share buyback and perhaps even some director buying then things can very quickly get back on track away from this massive undervaluation they have identified.
