Federal Government's BITRE just issued its July 2021 domestic aviation statistics.

In July 2021, the airlines in total travelling north from Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine to SYD only operated 157 flights, or an average of five a day. The normal daily total would be up to 75 (quite a deal lower on Saturdays, and somewhat lower on Sundays though the afternoons are busy).

Even with the tiny number of flights they'd timetabled, the cancellation rate was 77 per cent for the northbound MEL to SYD route according to BITRE. However heaps more flights were never put into the timetables, and hence not cancelled within the seven day period when a 'cancellation' is apparently recorded.

That's pathetic.

Across Australia (i.e. all domestic air routes), QAN including QantasLink only flew 9711 times in July 2021. In July 2019, QAN including QantasLink flew 19687 times. The decline was most pronounced in 2021 on the non-WA and non-Queensland intrastate routes - in other words, sharp drops between Australia's three most populous cities plus Gold Coast/Sunshine coast, big drops in any other routes to/from Melbourne and Sydney and so on.
