I was in primary synthetic graphite manufacturing powders and iso-moulded blocks (non-electrode) for 10 years and no gas was used in the production. The only gas used was either pre or pos machining thermal halogen (Cl) purification raising the oxidation threshold to 600C.
Not sure what process you are referencing.
