If MQG wished to buyback shares they would have to lodge an intention notice via ASX, as correctly pointed out this has not been done.
However what has slipped quietly in (not market sensitive!!) is a notice on 25 Aug that two MQG subsiduaries (MQSIML and MQPML)have been granted an exemption by ASIC so they can purchase shares in MQG.
