Hi there ... had the same prob with an Epson Colour 600 printer ...
The pop-up that shows ink levels just disappeared and never came back ... sniff
Haven't had the prob where the lights on the machine (I presume you mean...) don't come on.
Could be you have black ink but it has gone hard in the cannister ...
Test your print in colour to see how it comes out ... the three primary colours equal black when together in equal proportions ... from my art student days ... lol
You could run the Utility function and clean your heads etc ...
I run a test print page every month to ensure the heads don't dry up ... that is a pain if it does and a trip to the shop to get it cleaned ($100) out if it runs dry.
Other than that I am happy ... bought my 600 in '97 and still going strong ...
