You may find out this turns out to be the other way around. What use does 4DS have for HGST/WD now? It seems their involvement was largely consultancy in understanding the best direction to tune the tech, i.e. go as fast as you can and see if you can match DRAM for speed, but with much better retention.
The partnerships with imec and Stanford are far, far more important than HGST/WD. Why wouldn't WD want a free option on both a licencing agreement and 1st right of refusal for acquisition? They would be crazy to let that lapse. 4DS on the other hand would see a significant discount applied to any acquisition because HGST/WD options exist.
Maybe it's just a coincidence the next lot won't be done until July?
