Apparently XRF analyzer guns are not effective for detecting lithium, as lithium is a light element that XRF cannot detect. Other methods to identify lithium in rocks, such as ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) and LA-ICP-MS (Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry).
ICP-MS and LA-ICP-MS are both more sensitive than XRF for detecting lithium, and they can also be used to measure the concentration of lithium in rocks. This information is important to determine the economic viability of a lithium deposit. My understanding is exploration companies are using this type of tool in the field. Makes perfect sense.
