Office 365 is an environment that has a whole bunch of products that you can subscribe too, i.e Office, CRM, Outlook, Yammer, Skpe etc. Thread would be one of those products, when you are using Office 365 and select to subscribe to thread it automatically becomes enabled and you can use it throughout the 365 environment.
If you are using CRM for instance, it may allow you to aggregate all your chats from Yammer, Skpe, Outlook and CRM into a single point for you to interact with.
It is like the old days of having your software on every windows PC shipped. You may not use it but it tempts you too at least try it, especially if they have a free trial period.
