Been scratching my head since I posted regarding the amount of Fluorspar in Lithium Ion batteries.

Firstly the original presenter I referred to was from Mongolia Minerals, who mine Fluorspar. The presentation was on the Benchmark platform.
The Benchmark graph I sighted shows 9% Fluorine by weight and about 36% Lithium by weight. Lets say 25%.
The molecular weight of Fluorspar (CaF2) is 38.
The elemental weight of Lithium (Li) is 3.
So there is a factor of 12.67 when you compare Fluorspar - the mineral - to Lithium - the element.
Multiply this by the 25% established above So for every kilogram of Lithium in a battery you need 3.17 kg of Fluorspar as feedstock.
Of course the Fluorspar is just 97% pure, so the feedstock goes to 3.26.
Add in yield at the various stages of the process and the amount of Fluorspar goes up.

Perhaps the figures given by Mongolia Minerals is not too far from mark!
Notwithstanding the above, I still find the raw comparison between the weight of elemental Lithium and the weight of mineral feedstock (Fluorspar) to be strange and confusing.

As I said before I am looking forward to the Benchmark presentation on the 27th.
