To produce GO, I read from somewhere that the graphite has to be very pure with grade of over 99.2% and fairly large flake size from 1mm to 2mm. The announce mentions one way of producing graphene from GO is by mechanical exfoliation. For those who doesn't know, this is the same method used by the 2 Russian researchers at UK who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010 by using scotch tape to peel off successive layers of graphite from a tiny block of graphite until it is one atom thick.
