Given that gas is lighter than water and comes to the top anyway (like taking the lid off a soft drink bottle eventually the gas comes out of the liquid and the drink goes flat) why is there not gas flowing out of the holes at the moment. I understand there is a need to separate gas from water, but I would have thought gas would come to the top anyway.

The reason coal seams need to be dewatered is the way the gas is trapped in the coals (cleats) and dewatering helps the gas to desorb. I have put a link below for a read.
