One good thing about working as a consultant in the oil and gas industry is that you always have the next downturn just around the corner and the knowledge that you could be without a job tomorrow.

I saved everything I could and paid off the mortgage and built up some decent super. My working career came to an end around 2015/2016 during a down turn and after an offshore job from hell where I finally realized I was getting too old to be sitting offshore for weeks at a time and sitting in choppers for hours wondering when my bladder would burst.
