I’ve been reading up on heat stress in the poultry industry. It’s a significant problem for all livestock.

Heat stress in broilers is associated with lower body weight, inhibited immune function and higher mortality. It is also associated with undesirable meat characteristics and quality loss – observed changes in birds subjected to heat stress include lower protein content, increased fat deposition and decreased proportion of breast muscle.

In laying hens, heat stress also causes a loss in body weight, inhibited immune function and higher mortality. There is also a significant reduction in egg production, reduced egg weight, reduced egg shell thickness and increased egg breakage.

It is estimated that annual economic loss due to heat stress in the poultry industry in the United States is $128 to $165 million and that total annual economic loss to the total livestock industry in the United States due to heat stress is $1.69 to $2.36 billion.

I can well understand the interest of potential partners in the utility and value of TPM in heat stress.
