There were a few good reasons that Garden Island was chosen as the demonstration site:

- Garden Island is owned by the Federal Government, so there are fewer hurdles to jump in getting development approvals through as they don't have to deal with private landowners and local councils i.e. less red tape.

- Half of the proposed micro grid has already been constructed.

- Offtake agreements for power and water are already in place.

- Proximity to one of Australia's biggest marine engineering facilities, making it the ideal place to prepare and deploy the buoys from. A place where modifications and repairs can be made during the demonstration period.

- Grid connection has already been established.

- Kinder sea conditions in Autumn months in which to fine tune systems. Deployment and recovery operations can be done more easily.

- High energy sea conditions during winter, when full range of operations can be tested.

- Near CCEs headquarters.
